A few days ago, I asked the Spirit of the Lord who and what were the seven thunders that spoke but their words not written down and why were they not written down. Here is what He showed me.

A day is coming to this entire world that has never been seen and never been heard. Just as the voice of the Almighty THUNDERED from mount Sinai to the children of Israel, so shall His mighty voice thunder from heaven to all flesh!

In Exodus 20 and recounted in Deuteronomy 5, God spoke from Mount Sinai His 10 Commandments. They were all so frightened, so terrified of the voice of the Lord their God they pleaded with Moses not to hear His voice again.

18 Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off.

19 Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”

20 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.”

21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was. — Exodus 20:18-21 (NKJV)
23 “So it was, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.

24 And you said: ‘Surely the Lord our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that God speaks with man; yet he still lives.

25 Now therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore, then we shall die.

26 For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

27 You go near and hear all that the Lord our God may say, and tell us all that the Lord our God says to you, and we will hear and do it.’ – Deuteronomy 5:23-27 (NKJV)

They heard the voice of the Almighty and lived but were convinced they could not survive a second encounter. As Moses recounted this experience with all the people, He told them what God said:

28 “Then the Lord heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken.

29 Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! – Deuteronomy 5:28-29

When God said, “They are RIGHT in all that they have spoken,” He was not saying they were “righteous” but was stating the simple fact that they spoke what was truly in their heart. They spoke “truly”. Even so, their hearts were not right before the Lord God because what they heard was not mixed with faith.

For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. – Hebrews 4:2

After reading this verse in Hebrews, you may wonder how was the gospel preached to those of old. Understand that the voice of the Lord that spoke through Jesus while He was on the earth is the SAME voice that the children of Israel heard on that mountain. The voice of the Lord has a unique characteristic that human voices do not have “outside the anointing of the Spirit of God”. God’s voice PIERCES down to the very soul and heart of mankind.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12

What the children of Israel experienced at the foot of Mount Sinai when God spoke in a “thunderous” voice, is what we experience when the motives of our heart is exposed and we see the very nature of our sin…selfishness. When we saw our sin, we knew we were without excuse and were condemned to die. We knew that there was no place we could hide and that His judgment towards us was true and just. If Jesus had not been there and already died for our sins and extended to us His mercy and forgiveness, we too would have reacted in the same way as those of old did and just as God’s word did THEM no good, not being mixed with faith.

It was the SAME VOICE that spoke to those of old as now speaks to us today. Without that voice, our hearts would not be circumcised and we would not have been able to enter into that New Covenant promised by Jeremiah and fulfilled by Jesus. Because the Spirit of the Lord drew us to Jesus and, through the faith He provided, gave us a new heart, in fulfillment of God’s promises.

Now consider this…a time is coming when that same voice of the Almighty that spoke to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai and now speaks to those who hear today, will be speaking once again but not just to those who have come to Him in faith, but now His voice will THUNDER from heaven for ALL MANKIND to hear. Every living soul will HEAR HIS VOICE and, just as what happened to the children of Israel at Mt. Sinai, they will all feel as if they will die.

SUDDENLY, they will all see their sin. They will all see they’ve lived their lives through SELFISHNESS. They will all see they are WORTHY OF ALL CONDEMNATION and realize then that onLY through Jesus can mankind be saved, but because their hearts are NOT REPENTANT nor were they SEEKING THE TRUTH, the Almighty’s voice will not benefit them.

He Who Has Ears to Hear:
The seven thunders who uttered their voices that John was not allowed to write down their words ARE the seven Spirits of God. All of them are in Jesus Christ shown by John as seven horns and seven eyes.

And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. (Revelation 5:6)

Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding
Spirit of counsel and might
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. (Isaiah 11:2, NKJV)

These seven spirits of God are:
1– Spirit of the Lord
2– Spirit of Wisdom
3– Spirit of Understanding
4– Spirit of Counsel
5– Spirit of Might
6– Spirit of Knowledge
7– Spirit of the Fear of the Lord

Here are the characteristics of the voice of the Lord as thunder:

The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken in pieces; from heaven He will thunder against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to His king, and exalt the horn of His anointed.” — 1 Samuel 2:10 (NKJV)

Thunder breaks His adversaries in pieces.
Thunder judges.
Thunder gives strength to kings.
Thunder exalts the “horn” of the Christ.

Thunder brings confusion on the enemy of His people.

Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the LORD thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel. — 1 Samuel 7:10 (NKJV)

Thunder brings the “fear of the Lord”, thus opening up the eyes of the people to their sin in God’s perspective.

17 “Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the LORD, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking a king for yourselves.”

18 So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. — 1 Samuel 12:17-18 (NKJV)

Thunder is the voice of God.

4 After it a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice, and He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend. — Job 37:4-5 (NKJV)

By His voice, which is like Thunder, His arrows scatter the foe, opens the channels of the sea so the foundations are uncovered.

13 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe, lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them.
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen, the foundations of the world were uncovered at Your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. — Psalms 18:13-15 (NKJV)

In Him is the secret place of thunder. You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah — Psalms 81:7 (NKJV)

James and John were given the name “Sons of Thunder”
— Mark 3:17 (NKJV)

James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”;

And just as the “Sons of Thunder” were given that name, so are all those who walk as His true disciples. For the voice of the Almighty is that voice in whom those, who are led by the Spirit of God, follow. When His voice is heard from Heaven, all the people on earth will tremble with great fear. Those who belong to God will tremble but will also worship Him and be safe because they will be IN that secret place of the Voice of the Lord their God. Those who do not know Him will tremble with great fear and terror for they know their time of judgment is at hand.

When the seven thunders speak, it will be the Voice of the Lord our God and all men will hear it as His voice pierces their souls and shows them the depths of their sin. And those who do not walk uprightly, shall also hear. For all seven thunders will speak as one!

The REASON John was not allowed to write down what the seven thunders spoke is because these words are not to be “read” as from a book or letter but are intended by the Lord to be HEARD. For what words, that can be written down for mankind to read, will have as much power to pierce the souls and spirits of man? Mankind has been taking God’s written record of His Word and misinterpreting it for ages and if those words had been written down, these too would have been done in similar fashion. NO, God has reserved the sounding of those words for the day of the Lord as He will speak once more from heaven for all flesh to hear.

Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. — Revelation 19:15 (NKJV)

And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh. — Revelation 19:21 (NKJV)
